Using Backup Devices in SQL Server

In Microsoft’s SQL Server’s sql management studio, you can easily create a Backup Device for use in backing up single or multiple databases. In stead of creating multiple backup files for different backups, you can create one device that is actually a single file. This device acts as a container in storing multiple backups within this one file. This gives order and control of backing up SQL databases.

In order to create a backup device, you must point the device to a file location and give it a name. In this example, I created a device called MobileBlack1DB-Backup and I pointed it to the location: c:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\MobileBlack1DB-Backup.bak

Notice the file name ends in BAK. You will only need to have one BAK file. Whenever you schedule your backups to backup your database, you can create full backups to this backup device. This device will contain the individual backups.
