Using the Microsoft Snipping Tool

Using Microsoft’s native Snipping Tool instead of Print Screen has made life as an IT Specialist so much easier.  I hope this little tool will do the same for you. I am going to show you how to screen capture in windows.  I was quite shocked that more people didn’t know this little gem existed.  Now granted it isn’t highly technical or full of colors bells or whistles, but it sure is a huge time saver when working with customers.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

Launch the Snipping Tool by clicking Start > All Programs > Accessories >Snipping Tool.

Pull down the New drop down to select from the following:

  • Free-form Snip – Using the mouse, manually draw the exact shape to be captured. You, the user, have complete control over the exact area and how big or small the shape of the capture will be.

  • Full-screen Snip – As you click on this option, the Snipping Tool will capture your full computer screen including the Windows Taskbar. This feature is very similar to the Print Screen button, located above the Insert key on your keyboard.
